Safety Tips for Winter Weather from Evergy

Safety tips for fall and winter weather

  • Have an emergency kit

Stay severe-weather and storm ready by making an emergency kit for your home, workplace and vehicles.

  • Prevent frozen pipes

Set each faucet in your house to slowly drip water to keep pipes from freezing.

  • Operate generators outside

Don't operate a generator inside the home, including in the basement or garage.

  • Watch space heater placement

If you are using a space heater, place it on a level, hard surface. Keep anything flammable at least three feet away.

  • Check AC/furnace unit

Make sure your HVAC has a clean filter and is free from debris.

  • Avoid heating with a stove

Never use a stove or oven to heat your home. Doing so can increase the risk of burns and other health issues.

  • Bring pets indoors

If they can’t come inside, make sure they have shelter and access to clean water.

  • Wear layers

  • Heavy, warm material and layers of clothing will help keep you warmer. Gloves, hats and heavy socks may also help prevent your skin from getting too cold.
