Safety tips for fall and winter weather
Have an emergency kit
Stay severe-weather and storm ready by making an emergency kit for your home, workplace and vehicles.
Prevent frozen pipes
Set each faucet in your house to slowly drip water to keep pipes from freezing.
Operate generators outside
Don't operate a generator inside the home, including in the basement or garage.
Watch space heater placement
If you are using a space heater, place it on a level, hard surface. Keep anything flammable at least three feet away.
Check AC/furnace unit
Make sure your HVAC has a clean filter and is free from debris.
Avoid heating with a stove
Never use a stove or oven to heat your home. Doing so can increase the risk of burns and other health issues.Bring pets indoors
If they can’t come inside, make sure they have shelter and access to clean water.
Wear layers
- Heavy, warm material and layers of clothing will help keep you warmer. Gloves, hats and heavy socks may also help prevent your skin from getting too cold.
